James Charisma is a writer, editor, photographer, and entrepreneur. A transplant from Manhattan living in Honolulu, Charisma holds an Associate’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Chaminade University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology (with a focus in Psychopathology and Behavorial Profiling) from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
In 2010, he co-founded Charisma Industries, an artistic design agency specializing in developing creative content for print and digital media. With services including graphic design, brand and identity development, web building, copywriting, photography, illustration, business consulting, event coordination, public relations, and more, Charisma Industries' past and present clients include the The Tetris Company, USS Battleship Missouri, the Honolulu Museum of Art, Habitat For Humanity, Na Mea Hawai‘i, Otto Cake, the Hawaii State Theatre Council, Pacific Historic Parks, Archipelago, Brasserie Du Vin, Bar 35, eleven44, Kawaii Kon, The Manifold Magazine, KTUH 90.3 FM Honolulu, the Pearl Harbor Institute, Nella Media Group, and the Howard Hughes Corporation. Charisma Industries also serves as the official marketing agency for The ARTS at Marks Garage, Kumu Kahua Theatre, Palolo Valley Brewing Company, Sweet Tea Hawaii, and Volcanic Publishing.
James Charisma also serves as the editor of Abstract Magazine, the award-winning lifestyle and culture collectible print publication for Hawai‘i; marketing director for Summit, a nationally distributed 180-page magazine with in-depth coverage of arts, business, civics, and literature in the Hawaiian hemisphere; and creative consultant for Accelerate, a publication dedicated to entrepreneurs and small business. He is also the editorial director for the annual ‘Ohina Short Film Showcase, Hawai‘i’s largest independent short film festival; and serves on the board of the Hawai‘i Publisher’s Association.
He is a regular contributor for HONOLULU Magazine, Modern Luxury, FLUX Hawaii, foundry, Kikaha, Chinatown Now, Metro, and The Manifold Magazine, with additional work appearing in Playboy, HAWAII Magazine, The Hawaii Independent, INHNL, Hawaii Skin Diver, Pacific Business News, Pacific Edge Magazine, the Honolulu Weekly, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the ForWard Journal, the Ward Village blog, and others.
An avid photographer, his images have been featured at the Honolulu Museum of Art, Pauahi Tower at Bishop Square, Koa Gallery, thirtyninehotel, The ARTS at Marks Garage, and on permanent loan at Glazers Coffee Shop in Mo‘ili‘ili.
